Gaels bounce back, defeat C-G/D

The St. Edmond softball team quickly moved on from a tough loss earlier in the day on Wednesday, stopping Clarion-Goldfield/Dows at Rogers Park, 10-0 in five innings.

In a game delayed from Tuesday night due to weather, Humboldt downed the Gaels, 10-9.

St. Edmond scored a run in the first, another in the second, three in the third and finished off the Cowgirls with five in the fifth to win for the fifth time in the past six games.

“It was good to see us bounce back,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “It was tough to drop that one at Humboldt, but the girls regrouped and took care of business.”

Kaili Henning and Lauren Gibb each had two hits and drove in two runs with Alyson Nieland and Anna Kolacia also plating two runs for the Gaels. Ella Vratny picked up the win, striking out three with just one hit allowed.

“Ella did a great job,” Shirbroun said. “I’m hard on her, but I know she can be a great pitcher.”

Gibb plated Gracie Harvey in the first with Nieland delivering an RBI-double in the second that scored Michaela Leiting. In the third, Henning, Harvey and Elly Berry all came around to make it 5-0.

“We’re doing a good job of waiting for our pitch and connecting,” Shirbroun said. “The girls are working the count and making great contact.”

Gibb, Vratny, Peyton Bradley, Nieland, Kolacia, Ansley Oswald and Henning all reached in order with one out in the fifth. Kolacia had a two-RBI single and Henning the same to end it.

Mady Hennigar had the lone hit for the Cowgirls.

Leiting scored twice as a courtesy runner for Vratny, Josie Harvey also came around to score after running for Kolacia in the fifth. Henning added a stolen base.

St. Edmond heads to Clear Lake on Friday before hosting a tournament on Saturday that will include Mason City, Woodward-Granger and fourth-ranked (Class 2A) North Union. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows hosts Iowa Falls-Alden Friday.
