Trey Lyons was hoping for a memorable senior season and on Monday the Webster City golfer accomplished that.

Lyons earned the North Central Conference individual championship with a 78, one stroke ahead of runner up Tommy Birdsell (79) of Hampton-Dumont-CAL at the Country Club.

“This means a lot to me, because it is my senior year and I really was hoping that I could get a win this year,” Lyons said. “I got it (today) in a pretty important tournament which helped my team win the NCC as well.”

On his way to the individual achievement, the Lynx senior helped his team earn the NCC team title. The Lynx shot a 328, 20 strokes ahead of runner up St. Edmond (348).

“I felt like our guys battled hard and just couldn’t get over the hump,” said St. Edmond head coach Matt Dillon. “It certainly wasn’t our best day. We were unfamiliar with the course. We had as much time on the course as everyone else.

“It was a frustrating day for me and our players. We all wanted to play better.”

Hampton-Dumont-CAL (339) was third, followed by Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (375), Algona (381), Clear Lake (336), Humboldt (342) and Iowa Falls-Alden (358).

Lyons was four-over after four on the front and played the final five at even with a birdie. He was four-over after four on the back, and played the final five at one-under with two birdies.

“Around the green was my most successful thing,” Lyons said. “I had a lot of up and downs around the green.”

Three teammates joined Lyons in the Top-10. Drew Schwering placed third with an 80 and Beau Klaver tied for eighth with an 84. Chase Rattenborg was 14th after a round of 86.

“Webster City has a nice team,” Dillon said. “When we played them in the regular season, they beat us by two strokes and we felt we let that get away from us.”

St. Edmond’s runner up performance was led by Drew Schaeffer’s 83, finishing seventh in the team standings.

Riley Travis (85) was just outside of the Top-10 in 11th place. Caleb Schaeffer (88) and Peyton Scott (92) finished 17th and 28th for the Gaels.

“It’s time to move on and now we won’t play against Class 3A and 2A schools and we can focus on 1A schools at sectionals on Friday,” Dillon said. “Hopefully we can qualify for districts with a strong showing at Coon Rapids (sectionals), then we will be back at home at Lakeside.

“We have to be prepared and ready to play. These guys are quite capable.”

Humboldt’s Gabe Gidel (81) was fourth in the individual standings. Jayden Gargano (85) was tied for 11th and Ty Gargano (88) was tied for 17th with teammate Carson Sleiter (88).
