Memorial Day special: Gaels, Dodgers meet

Baseball teams haven’t squared off since 2014

A local rivalry is being renewed on Monday, as St. Edmond and Fort Dodge square off on the baseball diamond for the first time since 2014 in the opening round of the St. Edmond Memorial Day Tournament at Rogers Park.

First pitch between the Dodgers and Gaels will be at noon. The other semifinal matchup pits Newell-Fonda against West Marshall on the complex’s Wrigley Field.

The winners meet after the conclusion of the first contests on St. Edmond’s home field. The consolation final is on Wrigley.

Head coach Mike Szalat’s St. Edmond squad opened its season with a 6-3 win over Emmetsburg last Friday night. Senior aces Cael Kolacia and Peyton Scott combined to strike out 16 on the mound, while classmate Grant Heldorfer was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a triple.

The Dodgers suffered a pair of setbacks in Waterloo last Friday to fall to 0-3 on the young season. Fort Dodge was defeated by Clinton (5-1) and Davenport West (7-3).

Head coach Blake Utley’s team droped its season opener last Monday versus third-ranked and defending state champion Johnstson, 14-4.

Junior Carson Peterson had two hits against Clinton. Junior Jace Ulrich notched a pair of RBI versus West, giving him five for the season in the first week.

Newell-Fonda is 2-2 and rated 10th in 1A. West Marshall is 3-2.
