MADRID — The St. Edmond boys and girls track teams both earned five automatic state-qualifying bids on Thursday.

The Gael boys, who finished second in the team standings, will compete in at least four state relays, and senior Kase Baker (22.53) also moved on in the 200-meter dash.

“We’re defintely happy with the way things went,” said SEHS boys coach Donn Larson. “We got about what we figured so far. I was hoping that we could get all of our relays in. We have outside chances in the distance medley and the shuttle hurdle relay.”

The Gaels’ sprint medley team of Parker Oswald, Anthony Lacina, Kase Baker and Sean Flattery set a stadium record with a time of 1:36.77.

The 4×200 quartet of Grant Heldorfer, Lacina, Flattery and Baker clocked a 1:33.00.

The 4×100 team of Heldorfer, Oswald, Flattery and Baker earned a gold medal, along with the 4×400 quartet of Heldorfer, Cain Reed, Oswald and Flattery.

“Our 4×4 can run faster, and the 4×2 had a PR,” Larson said. “In the 4×2, we had two bad handoffs, so we could defintely go down to a 1:32 and compete for a title down at state.

“We scored a lot of points in the field events as well and knocked some time off of our shuttle hurdle relay. We were running well and it was nice to run against some schools our size and teams we never see. Now we will have to wait and see until (Friday) and find out if the DM and shuttle hurdle relays can get in.”

The St. Edmond girls earned five automatic state bids as well after placing second.

The 4×800 quartet of Caroline Shelly, Michaela Leiting, Emma Alstott and Aubrey Bemrich broke a stadium record in a time of 10:10.59.

The distance medley team of Mya McClain, Gracie Harvey, Avery Galles and Bermich had a record time of 4:27.59.

Aubrey Bemrich was a double qualifier, winning the 800 in a record time of 2:29.33 and also grabbing the 1500 title.

Emma Alstott won the 400 hurdles in 1:10.14, breaking a stadium record that stood since 1981.

“Everyone had PRs and we just missed in the 4×400. That should get in,” said SEHS head coach Monica Shelly.”We have a shot in 4×4 and the 4×2 as well. Overall, we did amazing and we even had a couple of bad handoffs. We tapered a little so we could be ready.

“We feel we are in solid position.”

The first-place finishers in each event automatically qualify for state, along with the next 14 best times and marks.
