Tritons run strong in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa Central track program had a strong weekend here at the Mustang Open hosted by Mount Mercy.

The Triton men set several meet records, qualified five more events for nationals and picked up the team title along the way with 167 points. The Iowa Central women finished as the top junior college, placing fourth overall and qualifying one more for nationals.

On the men’s side, Dashinelle Dyer in the 100, Tristen Hanna in the triple jump and the trio of Hunter Klimek, Chris Levario and Noah Friske in the 10,000 all punched bids to the upcoming NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Josie Stackis secured a spot in the women’s 10,000.

“Our squad competed well again,” Iowa Central head coach Jordan Burkholder said. “We had four new national qualifiers in the 10,000 in addition to a bunch of PRs across several events. I’m excited to see how the competitions at (our upcoming meets) pushes our students.”

Jaheem Hayles broke the 110 hurdles record to place first in 13.98, Dyer did the same in the 100 in 10.4 with Robin Aguilar Gonzalez (800/1:56.23), Aries Scott (long jump/23-4), Hanna (triple jump/14.91m) and David Grimaldo Bosquez (high jump/6-5.5) also claiming first place medals.

Jerome Jessup, Hayles, Lee Eppie and Dyer won the 4×100 in a meet record time of 40.72.

Klimek was the 10,000 runner-up, Cassius Havis placed second in the 800, Eliot Cummings was second in the long jump and the 4×400 secured silver. Levario was third in the 10,000.

“It was a big day for the Tritons,” Executive Director Dee Brown said. “We had some great competitions in the field events and on the track. We had some girls make their debut in the javelin and long jump while the throwers battled in the hammer.

“Tristen had a huge breakthrough in the triple jump and our 10,000 kids were outstanding. Not only did we get four national qualifiers (in the 10,000), but everyone ran outside their comfort zones for 25 laps and exceeded expectations.”

Hannah Connell set a new meet and facility record in the 100, clocking a time of 11.49 in the prelims. She won the race with a time of 11.56 in the finals.

Lila Alvarez captured the 3,000 Steeplechase in a meet record time of 11:40.23, Victoria Adu broke the record in the hammer with a throw of 57.48m to win and Ashley Micheaux claimed the shot put in a record of 14.85m.

Micheaux was also second in the hammer and Kiya Wulf the runner-up in the 100 hurdles. Stackis placed third in the 10,000 and Wulf third in the 100 hurdles.

Iowa Central will compete later this week at the Drake Relays followed by regional championships beginning.
