SCHREIER SPRINTING HOME

Tyler Schreier has his sights set on an elite finish to the 2021 track season.

Not for himself. For his coach.

The Fort Dodge senior sprinter has been everywhere at meets this year, competing individually in the 100-meter dash and long jump while also anchoring the Dodgers’ talented 4×100- and 4×200-meter relay teams.

Schreier and his teammates — who have helped FDSH win multiple meets in a single season for the first time this millennum — are focused on making up for lost time after missing 2020 due to the global pandemic.

They also want to send head coach John McBride — who is in his 14th and final year at the helm — out with a memorable experience.

“My goal is to win the open 100 at state for Coach McBride’s last year,” said Schreier, a Drake Relays and state performer as an underclassman. “He has been an amazing coach for me through high school, and has pushed me to be the best I could.

“I thank him for getting me to where I am now.”

Schreier was a third team all-state football selection this past fall after accumulating 48 receptions for 714 yards and nine touchdowns — all numbers that ranked him near the top of Class 4A. He was also an all-conference and all-district baseball pick in 2020 after stealing 23 bases and batting .398 with a .507 on-base percentage to go along with 27 runs scored and 13 RBI.

Once track season ends next month, Schreier will join Blake Utley’s FDSH baseball program.

“It’s very important to compete in multiple sports in high school, because you’ll meet new people on the way and it’s a great experience to try things you’ve never done before,” said Schreier, who will compete at Iowa Central in both football and track. “To me, being a Dodger is to show every that we can compete with the bigger schools and that we are always something to watch out for.”
