Gael boys win meet for first time since ‘16
CLARION — For the first time since 2016, the St. Edmond boys track team earned a meet championship on Friday at the Cowboy Relays.
The Gaels accumulated 132 points to top the Class B standings. West Fork (127.5) and West Hancock (110.5) followed.
Head coach Donn Larson’s squad racked up six golds and six silvers to prevail.
“It was a fun experience, being able to take that victory lap for the first time in a while,” Larson said. “It means a lot to the program. The guys worked hard. Even with the state success we’ve had, it’s not always easy to win a meet (during the regular season) — especially when you’re up against a lot of (Class) 2A competition.
“We’re getting there, but it’s early and there’s still plenty of work to do. But we made good jumps in this meet. A lot of personal records. It’s nice to see the kids able to enjoy the fruits of their labor for a night (in the form of a title).”
Kase Baker won the 200 in 22.4. Sean Flattery took the 400 in 53.06.
St. Edmond was a four-time relay winner, taking the sprint medley (Grant Heldorfer, Anthony Lacina, Baker and Flattery) in 1:38.99; the distance medley (Braydon Smith, Zach Smith, Cael Kolacia and Heldorfer) in 3:58.94; the 4×100 (Kolacia, Lacina, Flattery and Baker) in 46.13; and the 4×400 (Heldorfer, Kolacia, Baker, Flattery) in 3:39.37.
Aaron Lursen crossed second in the 3200 with a time of 11:33.98. Isaac Landwehr was the 400 hurdles runner-up in 1:02.75. Hayden Mayer (1600, 5:12.67) and Quinten McCarville (high jump, 5-6) were also silver medalists, along with both the 4×800 (Drew Szalat, Thomas Cosgrove, Zach Loerts and Mayer) in 9:24.07 and the shuttle hurdle relay (Landwehr, Cosgrove, Szalat and Braydon Smith) in 1:13.00.
Landwehr was third in the long jump at 18-2.
St. Edmond is at the Dodger Relays on Monday, and Manson Northwest Webster on Thursday.
