Tritons sweep Southeastern

The Iowa Central softball team finds themselves on just the kind of run head coach Bo Tjebben loves to see.

Behind more key hits and strong pitching when it was needed, the Tritons pushed their win streak to nine in a row with a sweep over Southeastern here Sunday at Rogers Park.

Scores were 9-6 and 8-4.

“I know I keep saying it, but the energy of this team is just so incredible right now,” Tjebben said. “The girls continue to amaze me with what they do at the plate, in the circle and on defense. We just keep getting key at-bats from somebody new seemingly every single game when we most need it.”

In the opener, Abbie Thilges connected on a pair of homers and former Humboldt standout Carlie Thompson belted her own in support of pitchers Kayla Wookey and Emily English. Thilges was 2-for-3 with four RBI while Thompson, Rachel Newell and Abby Wilson all had multiple hits.

“Kayla and Emily did a great job,” Tjebben said. “And at the plate, Abbie just continues to crush the ball.”

After belting out 11 hits in the first game, Iowa Central (14-8 overall, 8-0 in ICCAC) had 12 in the nightcap. Laila Pelds followed Thilges with a two-homer game, driving in five.

Newell was 2-for-2 with two RBI and reached on a walk, ex-Humboldt standout Mady Lange had two hits and an RBI, and Mikhaela Muir earned the win in the circle, striking out 10.

“We’re without Madison Huisman for a while with an injury and Mikhaela really stepped up and pitched a great game,” Tjebben said. “It’s just been how this team has handled everything this year. Whenever we need someone to step up, they have answered the call.”

The Tritons will host Southeastern back here again on Monday.
