Strong start for Fort Dodge boys

DES MOINES — For the first time in nearly 23 months, the Fort Dodge boys track program was able to stretch their legs and see live meet action at the Don Graves Spring Classic inside Williams Stadium on Saturday.

The Dodgers took fourth in the invitational, anchored by a pair of gold-medal performances in the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams.

The quartet of Christian Davidson, Jake Erickson, Sam Daniel and Tyler Schreier captured the events in times of 43.70 and 1:33.20, respectively. Fort Dodge defeated runner-up Johnston in both races.

“I would say we’re all pleasantly surprised, given we didn’t really know how our first meet since 2019 would go,” FDSH head coach John McBride said. “It’s early, but as of right now, that 4×1 time is sitting at third in the state. The 4×2 is sixth.

“It was good to get Sam and Tyler back out there. They have the most varsity meet experience for us. And Christian and Jake are both going to be huge additions, with Christian coming over (from Pocahontas Area) and Jake being in his first track meet since eighth grade. They’re both really going to help.”

Davidson, Daniel and Schreier are seniors. Erickson is a junior.

Schreier was also second in the 100-meter dash (11.55) and long jump (20-8.25).

FDSH’s sprint medley (3:56.43) crossed in second as well, as did the 4×400 (3:39.76).

Junior Jon Astor earned a silver medal for the Dodgers in the discus (124-4), as did senior Sawyer Springer in the shot put (45-1).

“It was nice to score some points in the field events, with Tyler, Jon and Sawyer,” McBride said. “The competition will get tougher as the season goes on, but this is a really positive first step. It was great to just be out there and competing again.”

Tyler Kasperbauer was third in the 110 high hurdles (18.55) and 400 low hurdles (1:04.77).

The Dodgers return to action on Tuesday at Nevada and Thursday at Marshalltown.
