Adams, Moser to speak at AD convention

IOWA CITY — Andi Adams loves to coach softball.

Even more, she enjoys teaching others about the game and what it takes to cultivate a family structure in her dugout.

Adams, along with FDSH Strength & Conditioning coach Katie Moser, will speak at the annual State Iowa High School Athletic Director Association Convention.

The 53rd annual event is titled “The Iowa Athletic Director: The Moment of Lift.” The convention begins on Saturday. Both Adams and Moser will give their presentations on Monday.

Adams, Fort Dodge Senior High’s head softball coach, was approached by Panorama athletic director Erin Kirtley to speak at the convention. Kirtley is currently serving a three-year term as the second vice president of the IHSADA. Kirtley will move to vice president in the 2021-22 school year and eventually become the 55th President of the organization.

“Erin is a phenomenal person. She is in charge of setting up the convention,” Adams said. “It’s a huge five-day convention with an extensive agenda.

“She approached me and asked if I would be able to share some of philosophies, (concentrating on) what works for me and my coaching staff. She is one of the best female ADs around. I loved her personality when I first met her on an advisory board we were on.”

Adams just completed her 20th season as the FDSH softball coach, helping lead the Dodgers to their first ever state runner-up performance in Class 5A. She has 627 victories as FDSH head coach, and 680 overall in her career.

Adams has helped lead the Dodgers to state five of the last six seasons, and 11 times total since 2002.

Fort Dodge’s all-time winningest coach, regardless of sport, will speak on the topic, “Supporting Your Coaches & Fostering Key Relationships.”

Adams will speak with Panorama girls basketball coach Kylee Boettcher. Adams will share important points on why and how schools are able to keep your most valuable coaches in the game. The two will share tips on what coaches really need from their athletic directors to build trusting relationships, and how crucial it is to growing a strong program.

“I don’t give clinics, so I’m excited to speak at something like this,” Adams said. “I love speaking and talking about softball and female athletes.”

Moser, who officially took over the strength and conditioning program at FDSH on Dec. 1, was surprised when Kirtley approached her.

“I was kind of shocked that she wanted me to talk, given it was coming from such a prominent AD,” Moser said. “I feel I have a really unique story to tell. I believe I’m one of only two strength and conditioning coaches in the state that are female.

“I don’t want to be known as a female strength and conditioning coach, but as Fort Dodge’s strength and conditioning coach.”

Moser will team up with Panorama strength and conditioning coach Bruce Dahlhauser — a West Bend-Mallard graduate — to speak on their topic: Build Your Own Strength & Conditioning Program.

Moser and Dahlhauser will be presented by Fort Dodge Senior High graduate and former state wrestling champion Josh Porter, who is now the Athletic Director at Clarinda.

Moser will help give an overview of their successful strength and conditioning systems, and give creative ways for ADs to ensure athletes are getting what they need — regardless of the size of school and budget. They will talk about not letting resource obstacles and size challenges get in the way of having a top-notch program.

“We will be talking about some of the challenges we face,” Moser said. “How we make it work for kids in our situation, given what we have to work with.”
