Triton women fall just short

The Iowa Central women were left on the wrong end of a 75-72 decision here Saturday inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Despite that, though, Triton head coach Brian Ortmeier was left feeling confident with the gains made by his team following the season opener.

Isabell West scored 30 points with eight rebounds and six assists, with Nevaeh Galloway registering her second career double-double in as many games, scoring 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds for Iowa Central.

“I told the girls that I was proud of their effort,” Ortmeier said. “We took them down to the wire. I was pleased with the effort, but now we have to learn how to finish better.”

The Tritons raced out to a quick lead, going up 20-15 and taking a 30-16 advantage on the heels of a 14-3 run. West scored 17 in the opening half to lead the way.

Over the final 20 minutes, though, Iowa Western was able to wear Iowa Central down. They slowly cut into the deficit, gaining the lead in the fourth.

Grassy Germano and Dustie Obah each scored 15 for the Reivers, who outscored the Tritons 26-16 in the third and 18-13 in the fourth.

“Ultimately, it comes down to second-chance points and offensive rebounds,” Ortmeier said. “They had 25 offensive rebounds and scored 20 second-chance points.”

Autumn Dykstra added 11 points with six rebounds and Nevaeh Moeschter had eight points and five assists. Webster City graduate Taylor McKinney chipped in with two points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Iowa Central returns to action on Wednesday at Ellsworth.
