Gaels open New Year at Webster City

WEBSTER CITY — The St. Edmond basketball teams will begin the new year with a familiar foe as they travel to Webster City to face the Lynx in a North Central Conference doubleheader.

The Gael girls (0-7 overall, 0-4 North Central Conference) will start the twinbill at 6:15 p.m. against the Lynx (0-4, 0-2). Boys tip will be at approximately 7:45 p.m. The Gael boys (2-5, 2-2) are looking to snap a three-game losing streak as the Lynx (1-1, 1-1) have only played two games.

The Gael boys dropped two league games before break, but head coach Adolph Kochendorfer is excited for his team to get back on the court.

“I thought our practices went well during the break,” Kochendorfer said. “We kept them short and had a good two weeks.”

The Lynx picked up two victories over the Gaels last season and have won five straight in the series.

“I know they are going to play hard and we have to prepare for that,” Kochendorfer said. “We have to slow them down a little bit and rebound the ball.

“We can’t give them very many second shot chances.”

Junior Quinten McCarville is the Gaels’ leading scorer at 13.3 per night. Junior Hayden Mayer is averaging 9.7, while senior Anthony Lacina is scoring at a nine point clip. Sophomore Jackson Palmer (7.9), senior Drew Schaeffer (7.4) and senior Sean Flattery (2.0) will round out the starting five.

Senior Tyler Olson and sophomore Ty McKinney are the leading scorers for the Lynx, averaging 15.5 points per game. Junior Jamin Stuhr is scoring at a 11 point clip.

On the girls side, both the Gaels and Lynx are looking for their first victories of the season. The Gaels have had a tough schedule so far, playing three ranked teams.

“We implemented some new things on offense and have been working on that,” said first-year head coach C.J. Tracy. “We have had some girls that have really stepped up and will play some big roles moving forward.

“We are excited to get back on the floor and see how our practices will translate to competition.”

The Lynx have lost all four of their games, three of them by three points or less. Junior Kelly Stoakes (11.5) and senior Leah Kasch (11.3) are leading the way for Webster City.

“On film, they are an aggressive team and play hard,” Tracy said. “They play solid defense and take care of the ball.”

Senior Leah Neverman leads the Gaels in scoring at 9.7 points per game. Rounding out the Gael rotation are seniors Kacey Kruthoff (4.4), Avery Galles (2.4), juniors Mya McClain (4.7) and Gracie Harvey (4.0).
