South Hamilton defeats SE boys

Adolph Kochendorfer received a handful of scouting reports on South Hamilton coming into Thursday’s contest.

None of them talked about the Hawks shooting over 60 percent from the field or 50 percent from the three-point line.

South Hamilton did both of those last night, cruising to a 61-44 victory over the Gaels.

Carter Hewitt, who signed his letter of intent to play football at the University of Northern Iowa on Wednesday, scored 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field with six rebounds.

Landen Skartvedt added nine points, with both Freddie Lewis and Austin Busch scoring eight each for the Hawks (4-2 overall).

South Hamilton was 28 of 46 as a team from the field, and made 6 of 12 from deep.

“We talked to several coaches coming in and even (South Hamilton head coach Matt Juber) after and he said they haven’t shot the ball like that at all this year,” Kochendorfer said. “Our plan was to try and take Hewitt away and make other players beat us. You have to give them credit because they did that.”

For the Gaels (2-4), Quinten McCarville scored 11 points with seven rebounds and two blocked shots while Drew Schaeffer added seven and Hayden Mayer six.

St. Edmond committed just four turnovers, but shot 15-for-53 on the evening.

“Many of those were good looks that just didn’t fall,” Kochendorfer said. “We just couldn’t get any rhythm going.”

The Hawks led throughout, building an 11-point advantage in the first quarter, pushing it to 16 on the heels of a 7-0 run in the second.

South Hamilton made 14 of 22 field goals over the opening 16 minutes, including 5 of 6 triples.

St. Edmond was able to cut the deficit to 10 with a quick 6-0 scoring burst after halftime. McCarville knocked down a pair of three-pointers and scored seven in the quarter, but Hewitt answered and put the game out of reach at 39-20.

Up next will be a return to the North Central Conference for the Gaels, as they head to Humboldt Friday night.
