Camron Phetxoumphone was a little nervous heading into the Don Miller Invitational this past weekend, but once he hit the mat, the defending Class 2A state champion wasn’t about to let nerves dictate his performance.

This was the first full week back for the Webster City wrestling program, as the school had been online learning for two weeks. Phetxoumphone got two matches on Thursday, but didn’t get a chance to test his conditioning as he earned two quick falls.

“I get a little nervous, but I know I am a tough opponent for anyone and I will fight until the end — whoever my opponent is,” Phetxoumphone said. “I knew I was the toughest mentally, thanks to my coaches.

“I knew my finals match was going to be very tough.”

Phetxoumphone made quick work of his first two opponents at 113 pounds, earning a fall in 16 seconds and then a fall in 1:31 in the semifinals.

In the championship, 2A’s top-ranked wrestler was pitted against 3A’s eighth-ranked freshman, Lucas Bruhl of Ankeny Centennial. Bruhl is the son of Fort Dodge’s Brad Bruhl, a 1988 state champion.

Phetxoumphone and Bruhl fought to a 4-4 tie in regulation. In the second overtime, Phetxoumphone held down Bruhl for 30 seconds. Bruhl was unable to hold Phetxoumphone down in the next 30 seconds, and the Lynx junior claimed his second Don Miller Invitational title with a 5-4 victory.

“He was tough overall, but I think with this being my first tournament and my first full match back, it wasn’t too bad (of a performance),” Phetxoumphone said. “I wasn’t quite physically there in that match. He was very strong, but I was there mentally, which made me come out on top.”

Webster City’s CJ Hisler (195) was third at 195 pounds. Hisler lost to Dowling’s Carson Hagan 8-1 in the semis, but bounced back with a fall in 3:07 over Spirit Lake Park’s Tyler Jurva.

The Lynx were seventh with 129.5 points.

Eighth-ranked Jase Goodell remained unbeaten on the season, picking up three falls on his way to the 126-pound championship.

Goodell (11-0) won by falls in 52 seconds and 2:26 in his first two matches. In the finals, he pinned Mason City’s Gabe Rolon in 3:20.

“Jase had a great tournament,” said Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman. “We know Gabe (Rolon) when he was at Eagle Grove. It was a great match for Jase to win.”

Colten Goodell (9-3) also pinned his way to a title with three falls. He had a quarterfinal fall in 3:05 and fall in 4:39 of the semifinals. Goodell then upset seventh-ranked Jordan Anderson (15-1) of Emmetsburg in 5:48 of the 220-pound championship.

“Colten had a couple of rough losses (early on),” Beaman said. “He just had to get his mind right and I think he did that (Saturday).

“He had a super tournament, and continues to mature.”

Joe Weydert (145) finished second after injury defaulting in the finals. He beat Emmetsburg’s Jace Nelson-Brown, 12-3 in the semifinals.

Jayden Gargano (10-2) lost to top-ranked Khyler Carstarphen of Dowling in the semifinals, but beat Jadyn Friedrich of Sioux City East (5:34) to finish third.

Humboldt finished sixth with 139 points.

Emmetsburg

Emmetsburg put three wrestlers in the finals, with fourth-ranked Matthew Wirtz coming away with the crown. Wirtz defeated eight-ranked Carson Hagan of Dowling in the finals by a 10-4 decision. He had two falls in his first two matches.

Anderson (15-1), who lost to Goodell in the 220-pound championship, had a fall and a decision in his first two matches.

Ben Saxton lost to Fort Dodge’s Tucker Pederson in the 170-pound final.
