Unbeaten Humboldt bests Gaels

HUMBOLDT — The No. 11 (Class 3A) Humboldt volleyball team remained unbeaten on the season, sweeping St. Edmond here Tuesday night.

Scores were 25-14, 25-16 and 25-12.

The Wildcats (25-0 overall, 5-0 in North Central Conference) have now won eight in a row over the Gaels (4-3, 1-2) dating back to the 2011 season. They have dropped just one set during that stretch.

Jori Hajek led Humboldt with 21 kills and 21 digs, with Emily Zaugg adding 13 kills and two blocks. Kendal Clark had eight kills, 13 digs and two blocks, Deni McDaniel 42 assists and 13 digs.

For St. Edmond, Leah Neverman had four kills and Lexi Mericle added three. Kierstin Clark and Aleah Anderson each had two. As a team, the Gaels were 42-for-45 serving with five aces.

“I didn’t know what to expect playing back-to-back nights on the road, but these girls showed they have a lot of grit,” SEHS head coach Dee Huss said. “They welcome good competition and know it is just what they need to push them to recognize where we need to improve.”

Mya McClain and Kacey Kruthoff each added 10 digs, with Anderson recording nine and Neverman seven.

St. Edmond hosts third-ranked (3A) Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Thursday night.

Humboldt returns to action Thursday at Algona before playing in a tournament in Mason City on Saturday.
