Iowa Central hosting exhibition scrimmage

The Iowa Central football team will give fans an early look at what’s to come in 2021 on Saturday.

While the NJCAA opted to shift football to the spring due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Tritons have been holding practices and will gather for a scrimmage this Saturday at 2 p.m. inside Dodger Stadium.

Joining them will be the Iowa Central band, cheer and dance teams to present a “gameday-like” atmosphere.

“This fall has been an adjustment for all of us, along with our students and athletes,” Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto said. “Many seasons have been pushed back to the spring which has resulted in just practices for the fall.

“Saturday will be an opportunity for our football, cheer, dance and band programs to show off to the Iowa Central and Fort Dodge Community the hard work they have been putting in.”

Drill work and other pre-game activities will start the scrimmage before 7-on-7 takes place. Following that, four 15-minute quarters pitting the offense against the defense will occur.

The Tritons open their 2021 slate of games on Saturday, March 27, vs. Southern Shreveport. They play four games inside Dodger Stadium this year, have four road games, and a bye through the end of May.

Other home game includes Iowa Western, Snow and Ellsworth with trips to College of DuPage, Ellsworth, Iowa Western and Arkansas Baptist.

Iowa Central went 7-6 a season ago, including a second consecutive win in the Graphic Edge Bowl. The Tritons also captured the ICCAC title with wins over Iowa Western (28-26) and Ellsworth (51-6).

There is no charge for the event, but masks are required.
