Two years ago, Kase Baker made his first impact on the football field for St. Edmond.

Friday night, Baker did it again in the very same end zone and against the very same opponent in Highway 7 rival Manson Northwest Webster.

The Gael senior ran in the game-winning two-point conversion to end a thrilling, back-and-forth double-overtime win over the Cougars, 39-37, here inside Dodger Stadium.

As a sophomore, Baker caught a touchdown pass from Drew Schaeffer in a 22-14 victory in overtime.

“We’ve been in this situation before,” Baker said. “Coach (Matt Dillon) called a quick-slant, which we had never practiced, and I lined up on the right and got it done. (Friday night) we got it done again.

“The whole team did great. We just knew this was our game and we wanted it.”

Baker, who finished with a team-high 62 yards rushing, powered through the Manson NW defense for the conversion after Sean Flattery had punched in a 5-yard score to tie it.

“I want that ball,” Baker said. “I go full-steam as hard as I can for my teammates and coaches. I got it in there and it feels amazing.”

Flattery ran for 61 yards and scored two touchdowns to help off-set a 299-yard, two-TD performance from Brayden Johll on the other side.

Parker Oswald caught a 73-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth as fellow senior Anthony Lacina sprung him with a perfectly-timed block. Oswald had four receptions for 129 yards with Lacina adding four catches for 104 with a touchdown.

Drew Schaeffer was 9-for-21 passing for 250 yards.

“That was one of the craziest games I’ve ever been involved in,” Dillon said. “You hate to see either team lose a game like that, but that is part of athletics. I’m just so proud of my guys for getting the win.”

Johll, who played on a sprained ankle he suffered in practice earlier this week, carried the ball 31 times. The senior ran for 118 yards in the first half and scored in the second overtime to give MNW the lead.

“I’ve never seen my team with such heart and passion,” Johll said. “I knew how badly each one of them wanted it. I was planning on splitting carries due to my sprained angle, but when I was out there, I knew the amount of heart we had was extraordinary and I had to stand tall with my fellow family.”

The Cougars tied things up with under a minute to go when Shawn Kenyon hit Tate Bianchi on a perfectly-designed play. Bianchi had 60 yards receiving on six receptions with two total touchdowns.

Kenyon, who ran in the TD in overtime, threw for 84 yards.

Dayton Snell finished off a crazy play in the third when he fell on a loose ball after Brodie Anderson forced a fumble. Anderson had three sacks on the night.

Oswald and Lacina each picked off passes for St. Edmond, with Flattery recording a sack.

The Gaels hit the road next Friday to face Alta-Aurelia, which lost to seventh-ranked (Class A) West Hancock last night, 54-26. Manson NW hosts Bishop Garrigan for Homecoming.
