Drew Schaeffer placed his name atop the St. Edmond football record books here Friday night.

Schaeffer racked up 339 yards passing as the Gaels improved to 2-0 with a 30-8 victory in their home opener inside Dodger Stadium over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

The senior completed 8 of 16 passes with three touchdown passes. His single-game total breaks the previous mark of 278 set by Andrew Gibb in 2017.

“Speechless,” Schaeffer said of his performance. “We have some incredible talent on this team and they just made big plays all night. And the offensive line up played great. Honestly, everybody played great, especially the defense in the second half.”

Schaeffer got his record-setting night off early, hitting fellow senior Anthony Lacina on a 75-yard TD strike on the third play from scrimmage. He also connected with Kase Baker on a 73-yard touchdown and found Lacina again in the second for an 84-yard connection that resulted in a score.

“I’ve said it countless times, but Drew is a special, special talent,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “I’ve been around this game a long time, but I’ve only had three quarterbacks that I’ve felt I could trust to call a game. Drew is one of those kids.

“When I was in high school, my coach gave me that trust and I am so thankful for that. Out on the field, the quarterback can see so much more than we can as coaches. Drew’s got a great feel and showed that.”

On his first completion to Lacina, Schaeffer became the 16th player in school history to throw for 1,000 yards in his career. He also now has 14 career passing TDs, which places him sixth on the all-time list.

Lacina finished with two catches for 159 yards, with both receptions resulting in scores. Baker had 112 yards receiving and added another 52 rushing, scoring his 16th and 17th career TDs.

Sean Flattery ran for 72 yards and Thornton Aljets knocked through a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter and also made three extra-points. The senior is now 16-for-22 on PATs in his career.

“We wanted to be 2-0 and now we’re 2-0,” Dillon said. “We’ve got a short week to prepare for North Union, but the goal remains the same. These kids have battled through so much just to get to this point and I’m hoping we can finish all this out because it could really be something special.”

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (0-2) got on the scoreboard late in the second when Trenton Jergenson found the end zone. Jergenson ran for a game-high 86 yards, while standout wrestler Reed Abbas led the defense with a pair of sacks.

The St. Edmond defense received a sack from Brock Stanek and an interception by Flattery. They allowed just 12 yards of total offense in the second half.

Next action for the Gaels will be on Thursday when they host North Union, who lost 17-13 to Okoboji last night, for Senior Night. The Cowboys travel to second-ranked (Class 1A) South Central Calhoun (2-0), who picked up a 34-7 win over No. 7 (2A) Greene County, Friday.
