New start date announced for spring sports

There is a new start date for springs sports in Iowa.

Both the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union confirmed on Monday a first practice date of May 1 assuming schools resume that same day.

The first day for competitions is scheduled for May 4 with postseason events also receiving new start dates.

Postseason dates for qualifying meets would be: track and field (May 28); team tennis (May 23); individual tennis (May 20/boys; May 27/girls); golf (May 26/girls; May 29/boys); soccer (June 4/girls; June 8/boys).

As for state meets, track would take place June 4-6; girls team tennis June 1-2/13; girls individual tennis June 5-6; boys individual tennis June 5-6; girls golf June 8-9; boys team tennis June 9; girls individual tennis June 10-11; boys golf June 11-12; with boys and girls soccer taking place June 15-20.

All current postseason host sites and state championship event venues are currently set as previously announced. Changes would only be made if needed.

The first dates for baseball and softball practice to begin remains May 4.
