Munson breaks women’s city series record

23-year-old bowler fires 802 series

Hannah Munson has been bowling since she was five years old, and she’s become good at it through the years.

Actually, she’s great at it.

Munson, now 23 years old, has rolled five perfect games. The only major plateau she had never reached was an 800 series.

That all changed on Sunday night at Family Bowling Center.

Munson reached that goal and earned a city record for high series in the process, rolling an 802 — topping the previous record set by Tammy Sheker of 796.

“I think it’s really cool,” Munson said. “I’ve only been living here for (less than a year). It was awesome.”

Munson was an assistant coach for the Fort Dodge Senior High boys and girls bowling teams, as well as being an assistant swim coach. She helped Kaleb Anderson and the Dodger boys to state bowling championships.

Before coming to Fort Dodge, Munson was the head bowling coach for the Ankeny boys and girls squads.

Munson was close to the record earlier in the year, rolling a 780.

“Earlier in the season, I had a 780,” Munson said. “Randy (Slawson, Family Bowling Center owner) told me I was super close, and thought I would be able to do it this season.

“Then two weeks later, I did it.”

Munson was close to perfection in her 288 game. She started with a nine/spare in the first frame. She put together a string of eight straight strikes heading into the 10th frame. She had a spare to open the 10th, then had an eight count.

Munson didn’t realize how close she was to the record until her third game, when she thought she could top the 800-plateau — a number never reached before by a female Fort Dodger.

“I knew I was close going into the last game,” Munson said. “I knew I could miss in one frame and strike the rest. I wasn’t really thinking about the record, more the 800. Getting an 800 and the record (on the same night) was a great accomplishment for me personally.

“I didn’t know I got the record until Randy told me. Randy was almost in tears when he let me know I had the record.”
