BOONE IS KING

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Boone McDermott had one goal all season long: be the last man standing.

The Iowa Central redshirt freshman won the 285-pound title at the NJCAA Championships here Saturday night in the final match of the session.

McDermott, who dominated his way through the bracket, downed Ellsworth’s Darrell Mason, 4-0.

Ashton Eyler earned bronze, placing third for the Tritons at 165 pounds, with Ja’Quez Bostic placing eighth at 197 pounds.

Iowa Central concluded the tournament in eighth with 69 points. Clackamas defended its title with 133.5 followed by Northeast Oklahoma and Iowa Western.

McDermott opened his run with three consecutive first period falls on Friday, besting Mateo Pena from Labette in 41 seconds, Tyler Shannon of Cowley in 62 and Garrett Clark from Ancilla in 18.

“One year ago, I put ‘2020 national champ’ in all of my social media bios because I knew that I was going to win,” McDermott said. “I preached it into existence.”

On the year, McDermott went 36-1 with his lone loss coming to nationally-ranked NCAA Div. I wrestler Carter Isley of the University of Northern Iowa, 2-1.

He finished with 21 wins via fall, four by major decision and two by technical fall. McDermott outscored his opponents a collective 244-43, recording 62 takedowns and allowing just six.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “I am super thankful for my family, my team and my community.”

In the semifinals, McDermott pinned Andre Baguma from Northland in 79 seconds. The former state champion from Dubuque Wahlert spent just over three minutes of wrestling time on the mats in his first four matches.

Eyler, a sophomore from Ohio, advanced to the semifinals after going 3-0 on Friday. He dropped a tough 5-3 decision to Isaiah Crosby from Iowa Western, 5-3.

Despite the setback, Eyler bounced back to win his final two matches and earn third. He topped Paul Illicete of Nassau, 11-4, and downed Seth Brossard from Rochester, 11-5, finishing the tourney 5-1 overall.

Bostic dropped his first round match on Friday, but worked his way through the consolation side with four consecutive wins. On Saturday, he fell to Holt Truax of NIACC and Harper’s Demarco Lee. The sophomore from South Carolina went 4-3 at nationals.

In all, the ICCAC left with 12 All-Americans for the meet.
