Tough Task

All of the little issues that have hindered the Iowa Central men came together here Wednesday night during a 15-minute period of play.

The Tritons, who led by three at the half over Ellsworth, were outscored 39-17 in the final 20 minutes, falling 66-47 inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Behind a commanding 29-6 run to begin the second half, the Panthers (14-15 overall, 4-9 in ICCAC) were able to sweep the season series with Iowa Central (10-18, 3-10).

CJ Wright led a balanced effort for Ellsworth with 13 points, as Josh Donaldson added 11 and Anthony Eddy 10. The Panthers had 10 different players make shots.

For the Tritons, both Andrew Gibb and Javonte Keck had 12, but the team went just 16-for-60 from the floor and missed 20 three-point attempts.

“It was everything that has hurt us in our losses all rolled into one period of play,” ICCC head coach Chad Helle said. “We’ve had stretches during games where we’ve played like this, but never for an extended period of play.”

Ellsworth held a 58-34 advantage on the glass, finishing plus-18 on points in the paint and plus-32 on bench points.

“I felt like with the way the first half went, we were playing good defense and they weren’t going to make enough shots to beat us,” Helle said. “But we got lazy on defense and didn’t control the glass at all. When you give teams that many extra chances, it’s tough to win.”

The Tritons went just 5-for-30 over the final 20 minutes from the field and missed 12 of the 13 triples they attempted.

Keck did grab nine rebounds and Gibb had seven with three assists. Marquis Henry scored nine points.

Sam Urness, a former Clarion-Goldfield/Dows standout, got the start for Ellsworth. He finished with two rebounds and an assist.

Iowa Central will close out the regular season Saturday when they travel to Cedar Rapids to face Kirkwood. Action begins at 3 p.m.
