DES MOINES — Cam Phetxoumphone and McKinley Robbins have been on a collision course with one another since early December.

Now, the top 106 pounders in Class 2A will get their stage on the biggest one of all.

Phetxoumphone from Webster City and Robbins of Greene County each had little trouble advancing to their first state finals here Friday night. The two will open the event inside Wells Fargo Arena at 6 p.m. Saturday.

For Phetxoumphone, a sophomore, wins over Humboldt’s Cole Nelson and Davenport Assumption’s Derrick Bass positioned him to become the 15th state champion all-time at Webster City. He is 41-0 overall and 80-6 in his career.

“I’m just ready for that match,” Phetxoumphone said. “I’m pumped. The environment is going to be crazy.”

Robbins, meanwhile, is 37-1 on the season after besting Carter Kolthoff of BCLUW and Lane Scorpil from Waterloo Columbus. That lone loss for the freshman came in the finals of the Dallas Center-Grimes Invitational at the hands of Phetxoumphone, 7-4.

Phetxoumphone’s teammate, Nick Gasca, had his tourney run come up just short of competing for a medal. The Lynx junior fell to OABCIG’s Jake Nieman in the 145-pound consolation second round by fall, ending his year 26-12.

Nelson rebounded from the loss to Phetxoumphone, winning his two consolation matches and advancing to the semifinals. The Humboldt senior earned a 10-0 major decision over Easton O’Brien of Atlantic and topped Chase Fiser from Bondurant-Farrar, 5-1, to improve to 34-7.

Freshman Jase Goodell and junior Colton Goodell were topped in the second round of consolation action, ending their medal quests.

At 113 pounds, Jase Goodell suffered a 10-4 loss to Cole Nelson from Perry, finishing 27-13 this year. Colton Goodell was topped by Andrew Hamilton from Algona, 3-2, going 33-9.

Algona’s Cole Lewis and Andrew Hamilton each secured medals staying alive on the consolation side after losses in the quarterfinals.

Lewis fell to Wyatt Voelker of West Delaware at 195 pounds, 14-2, turning right around and earning a 7-4 decision vs. Aiden Morgan of Davenport Assumption.

In his third match of the day, Lewis fell to Carter Maynes from Red Oak, 5-2. The senior is now 35-10 on the year.

Hamilton lost a narrow 3-1 decision to Clarinda’s Crew Howard in the 220-pound quarters, but came back with wins over Humboldt’s Colton Goodell, 3-2, and Christian Nunley of West Delaware, 7-2. He is now 40-2 on the season.

Emmetsburg’s Mason Griffin was knocked out in the 170-pound quarterfinals, dropping a tough overtime bout to Jax Flynn of Solon, 6-2. He rebounded with a 3-1 decision vs. Aiden Carr of Gilbert to secure a medal, but was bested by Caleb Swalla from Van Meter/Earlham, 4-2, to fall to 23-5.

Bret Hoyman continued his run to a possible third place medal at 152, winning twice on the consolation side in sudden victory. First, the E-Hawk downed Hunter Peske of North Hampton/Turkey Valley, 3-1, following that up with a 5-3 victory vs. Forest City’s Kristian Gunderson.

Greene County’s Brenner Gallagher was topped by Bondurant-Farrar’s Rylie Anderson in the consolation second round, 11-2, ending his tourney.

Consolation semifinals and finals in all three classes will begin at 10 a.m. with the championship session scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
