BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Gaels tangle with Garrigan again

THE TIP: St. Edmond heads to Bishop Garrigan for a Class 1A, District 2 semifinal. Action is set to begin at 8 p.m. following Newell-Fonda vs. Harris-Lake Park, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

PROBABLES: St. Edmond (8-13 overall): Connor Bocken, sr., 10.3; Jed Tracy, sr., 5.7; Drew Schaeffer, jr., 8.6; Cael Kolacia, jr., 7.6; Brock Stanek, jr., 2.9.

No. 4 Bishop Garrigan (19-2): Cade Winkel, sr., 16.4; Andrew Arndorfer, sr., 4.0; John Joyce, sr., 13.3; Angelo Winkel, jr., 18.8; Marcus Plathe, sr., 9.4.

WHAT’S NEXT: The winners between St. Edmond/Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda/Harris-Lake Park meet in Pocahontas on Thursday in a district championship.

LAST TIME OUT: The Gaels took care of Graettinger-Terril/R-A, 61-31. Drew Schaeffer scored 16 and Quinten McCarville added 10. The Golden Bears downed Storm Lake St. Mary’s, 83-37. Cade Winkel had 26, Angelo Winkel 16 and John Joyce 13.

DURING THE REGULAR SEASON: Bishop Garrigan claimed a 66-35 victory in the opener for both teams as Angelo Winkel had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cade Winkel also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards, and John Joyce scored 15. Connor Bocken led the Gaels with 15.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN BEARS: Bishop Garrigan advanced to state last year, earning a win over St. Edmond in the district final. Angelo Winkel, one of the top juniors in the state, leads the team in points, made field goals, rebounds and blocks. Cade Winkel and John Joyce have signed with Briar Cliff and Coe to continue their careers.
