Tritons fall to Ellsworth on the mats

IOWA FALLS — The eighth-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Iowa Central wrestling team split 10 matches with No. 9 Ellsworth here on Wednesday, but the Tritons weren’t able to accumulate a single bonus point in a 19-15 loss to the Panthers.

Sixth-ranked Daniel Vargas (125 pounds), No. 7 Andrew Gamble (157), fifth-rated Ashton Eyler (165), seventh-ranked Anthony Johnson (174) and No. 5 Boone McDermott (heavyweight) all prevailed by decision for Iowa Central, which suffered one loss by pin and one setback by major decision that wound up being the difference in this ICCAC dual.

“When you can’t generate any bonus points, it’s tough to overcome,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “We were close in a few matches, and we’re getting in better shape. But we just didn’t finish the way we needed to in a couple of tight decisions.”

Bret Minor was edged at 141 pounds, losing after giving up what Moffitt described as a “questionable” take down late in the first period that proved to be too much to overcome. Jaquez Bostic was also clipped at 197 against an opponent he had beaten twice earlier in the season.

“141 was kind of the tipping point, and Bostic’s had three close matches against that guy at 197,” Moffitt said. “He got us this time.”

Iowa Central had defeated Ellsworth in Fort Dodge two months ago, 28-13.

The Tritons now head to the Apodaca Duals in Powell, Wyo. Action starts on Friday.
