COLUMBIA, S.C. — A perfect finish to the ITA Kick-Off Weekend for Victoria Flores and Georgia Tech resulted in a berth into the National Team Indoor Championships.

Flores, a Fort Dodge native, scored a win at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles to help the Yellow Jackets top No. 13 South Carolina and improve to 8-0 on the season. She was named ACC women’s player of the week for her efforts.

Georgia Tech will now compete Feb. 7-10 in Chicago at the national meet held at the XS Tennis Village. Before that, they have home duals with both in-state rival Georgia — the defending indoor champions — and Texas.

Flores has followed up her strong fall with continued success in 2020, as she is currently 12-3 in singles and 12-2 in doubles. Pairing with Kenya Jones, the duo have won eight consecutive matches and are ranked 51st in the nation.

“It was a very inspiring and motivational weekend for the whole team,” Flores said. “We have been through a lot the past few years so I’m proud of us to start the season so far.

“It gives us so much confidence going forward as we have many big matches coming up this week and over the next few weeks.”

In singles, Flores has won each of her last three matches and was up a set in two others that were not completed. Her 6-3, 6-2 win over 28th-ranked Megan Davies of South Carolina was a highlight of the recent dual.

“Victoria had a great day with a good win in doubles and a big win in singles, beating a nationally-ranked player in straight sets,” Georgia Tech head coach Rodney Harmon said. “Making National Indoors was one of our team goals this year, so I’m very pleased for our team.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to Atlanta and preparing for two big matches this week against Georgia and Texas.”

Flores, a junior, went 13-15 overall in singles and 15-13 in doubles last year for the Yellow Jackets.

“I’m playing pretty well right now, but lead by my desire to give as much as I can for myself, my team and my school,” Flores said. “This is what is most exciting about college athletics — sharing the courts and competing at the highest level next to my best friends for something greater than ourselves.”
