Luke Moffitt was disappointed, but not discouraged in sixth-ranked Iowa Central’s wrestling loss to second-ranked NIACC on Wednesday night.

The Tritons (3-1 overall, 2-1 ICCAC) suffered a 27-9 loss to the Trojans (3-0, 3-0), winning only two matches on the evening.

In four of the eight matches, the Tritons lost by three or less points, with all coming down to the final seconds in the contest.

“We made a lot of mistakes, but we did lose some close matches,” Moffitt said. “We needed a wake up call. It’s important that we look at this and go back to work and be more aggressive.”

Fifth-ranked Boone McDermott (HWT) capped off the dual with a fall in 1:22 over Brennen Davis. Anthony Johnson (184) pulled off the upset for the Tritons, knocking off ninth-ranked Reldon Miller.

To open the meet NIACC’s Clarence Lee-Green rallied from an 8-2 deficit to beat Couy Weil. Third-ranked Hunter Lee faced off against Iowa Central’s fifth-ranked Bobby Tellez at 141. Lee recorded two takedowns and back points to earn a 10-8 victory.

NIACC moved up Christian Minto, who is ranked third at 165 to face top-ranked Ashton Eyler at 174. Minto recorded three takedowns and held on for a 7-6 victory. Eyler had one takedown in the match.

At 157 pounds, Iowa Central’s fifth-ranked Andrew Gamble suffered a 4-1 setback to Kendall Sandifer.

“We have got to move forward,” Moffitt said. “We would like to see NIACC again, but we won’t face them again until regionals.”

The Tritons opened the night in Hodges Fieldhouse with a 50-3 victory over Minnesota West.

The Tritons won nine matches against Minnesota West, earning bonus point victories in eight matches.

Fort Dodge graduate and three-time state medalist Drevon Ross earned a fall at 149 points. Maddy Roney (133), Gamble (157) and Eyler (174) all earned falls as well. Fort Dodge native Kade Hovey (220), McDermott (HWT) and Weil (125) all picked up forfeit wins.

Johnson had an 18-0 tech fall victory at 184.

Iowa Central is back in action on Saturday at the Buena Vista Open.
