Fort Dodge opened its bowling season with a home split against Urbandale on Thursday.

The defending state champion Dodger girls defeated the J-Hawks by a final of 2,486-2,098. The FDSH boys were edged by Urbandale, 3,038-2,959.

“The girls got off to the start they were looking for with a win,” Fort Dodge head coach Nick Vinson said. “They bowled well and took care of business.”

Leah Sanck, the 2019 state individual gold medalist, led the Dodgers with a 202-211–413. Lexi Hanson (210-195–405) was right behind, followed by Paige Copenhaver (167-141–308), Kat Flores (150-148–298) and Alexis Kenney (134-140–274).

“Leah and Lexi did a nice job of pacing the girls early on, and everyone pitched in throughout the night,” Vinson said. “While we got the result we wanted, a lot of questions were answered (Thursday) as well. We have a lot of work to do, but knowing these girls, that will just drive them to move forward.”

Freshman Carson Werning paced the FDSH boys (237-217–454), with Mitchell Bolton (206-212–418) and Kaleb Anderson (203-213–416) next in line. Brady Graves (199-191–390) and Kyle Davis (192-179–371) also turned in solid performances for the Dodgers.

“The boys had a good night. It was great to see some of the potential this team has,” Vinson said. “Even in the loss, we put up a score that would’ve been our third-highest last year.

“There were a lot of bright spots, with none more impressive than Carson Werning in his first varsity appearance. Carson was rock steady throughout the singles games. Brady, Kaleb and Mitchell did an outstanding job as well, especially in bakers. We also saw some flaws that need work; we had the lead heading into bakers, and struggled to finish. Being the first night of the season, though, we won’t read too much into it.”

The Dodger junior varsity boys prevailed, 2,444-2,353 behind Gavin Strain (192-152–344). The Fort Dodge JV girls fell by a score of 1,804-1,506. Hailey Folsom (106-126–232) led the way.

The Dodgers return to action on Tuesday against Des Moines Lincoln at Ridgewood Lanes.
