Dodgers roll past Lincoln
DES MOINES — Scott Messerly won’t be searching for a proper pep talk at practice for the Fort Dodge girls basketball team, in fact he will be trying to find a way to keep the momentum rolling.
The Dodger girls (1-0 overall) rolled to a 68-31 victory over Des Moines Lincoln in their season opener.
“Coming of the gate and going on the road, not knowing what to expect — is a great place to start,” said Messerly who is entering his second year as Dodger head coach. “We played as a team and we played pretty good.
“This team has a chemistry together and they all get along well, so to see them come together is exciting. For an opener, you can’t beat it.”
Messerly used a 1-2-1-1 press to start the game before switching to a 1-3-1 defense, that he said they put in just last week.
“In the second half, we moved our feet better and had some kids shoot the ball well,” Messerly said. “Tory did a nice job for us. We like to move her into different spots in the offense because she can shoot the ball well.
“It can be hard to shoot form there (point guard), so we try to find some one who can distribute the ball well.”
The defense held firm for the Dodgers, who were able to blitz through Lincoln’s defense, as three players reached double figures in scoring.
Sophomore Tory Bennett led the Dodgers with 15 points. Bennett dished out eight assists as well. Junior Cheyenne Miller-Hameed had 12 points. Sophomore Jalen Adams added 12.
Junior Tristin Doster had pulled down a team high eight rebounds. Junior Jacy Daniel came up with eight big points for the Dodgers.
“Jacy had a great night,” Messerly said. “Everyone came up with some big plays and to see Tristin pull down some big rebounds was good to see.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Friday when they travel to Ankeny.
