Stretches of cold shooting and turnovers caught up to the Iowa Central women here Friday evening.

The Tritons dropped an 85-46 decision to Northeast in the Great Western Shootout inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

It marked the second loss of the year to the Hawks, who also scored a 61-51 victory on their home floor over Iowa Central (4-4 overall).

Aaliyah Hull had 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but the Tritons were just 17-for-56 from the field and turned the ball over 23 times.

“You just can’t win games when you can’t string together good, solid possessions,” ICCC head coach Kelly Kruger said. “We were careless with the basketball and we weren’t focused on what we needed to do to be successful.”

After taking an early 19-17 lead over Northeast, Iowa Central hit a wall. The Tritons did not score for almost six minutes of the second quarter, falling behind 29-19.

For the Hawks, Beth Matas had a game-high 29 points, with four other players reaching double figures. Northeast shot 73 percent from the field in the second half, outscoring Iowa Central 50-15.

“Give Northeast credit because they got out and they ran their offense,” Kruger said. “We didn’t hustle back and we didn’t defend when we did get back.”

The Hawks held a 32-13 advantage in points off turnovers. Emina Hadzihusejnovic scored 12, both Kyla Moore and Jacalyn Schwanebeck added 11, and Julia Carbonell had 10.

For the Tritons, Justice Crooks and Isabell West each scored eight points, with Crooks also dishing out six assists. Mardaeja Cross had four points, three steals, three assists and six rebounds.

In the first game of the event, third-ranked North Iowa Area downed Central-Columbus, 92-39. Autam Mendez scored 24 points and Shiaana Secody had 14 for the Trojans, with Isabel Diaz leading Central-Columbus with 17.

The final day of the Great Western Shootout concludes Saturday with NIACC meeting Northeast at noon and Iowa Central facing Central-Columbus at 4 p.m.
