Cougars too much for Gaels

MANSON — It all came together here Friday night for Austin Anliker and the Manson Northwest Webster football team.

Anliker threw for 218 yards, accounted for three touchdowns and even kicked in a field goal to lead the Cougars to a 36-0 victory in the season finale over St. Edmond.

One of 10 seniors honored prior to kickoff, Anliker suited up for the final time for his father, veteran MNW head coach Jeff Anliker.

“It just feels amazing,” Austin Anliker said. “For our last game together, to get a win like this, I am just so happy for the team. It’s been special playing for my dad and we wanted to do this for the school and the community.

“To go out with a win on our home field — there is really no better feeling in the world.”

Anliker hit classmate Kadin Birkey for two touchdowns, including one with just a second remaining in the first half.

Birkey had five receptions for 111 yards on the night.

“This game meant a lot to me especially being a senior and this being a big rivalry for the two schools,” Birkey said. “It means a lot to me and to our whole community to go out with two wins in a row after last season.”

Manson NW (3-6 overall, 2-3 in Class A, District 2) opened the year with an 8-6 victory at Ogden and scored a 29-12 triumph on the road at Ridge View last week. This was the first win at home for the team since 2017.

Brayden Johll, a junior, ran for 129 yards and found the end zone on a 30-yard run. He carried the ball 30 times on the night and also had a reception.

Tate Bianchi hauled in five passes for 55 yards, senior Lucas Walsh had a 31-yard catch and recovered a fumble, and senior lineman John Schuttler carried the ball once for a first down late in the contest.

Dayton Snell got the Cougars on the board when he scooped up a loose ball in the first quarter and ran it back for a score. Birkey also had an interception as the MNW defense held St. Edmond (2-7, 0-5) to just 66 total yards on the night.

“We’ve really played well here these last few weeks,” Jeff Anliker said. “The defense was really great, just flying all over the field and playing physical football.

“I know this feels so good for the seniors to end like this and go out with a win to remember for years to come. Everybody just played so well and I’m so proud of them all.”

Along with Austin Anliker, Birkey, Walsh and Schuttler, Carson Collins, Taras Tomenchuk, Bryce Wyeth, Carson Peterson, Chase Jaeschke and Tommy Lawman played their final games for MNW.

St. Edmond was without starting quarterback Drew Schaeffer, as junior Devon Wirtz completed 14 of 28 passes for 67 yards. Senior Jackson Bemrich had six receptions and also recovered a fumble, with Brock Stanek recording a sack and a fumble recovery on defense.

“We just couldn’t get anything going on offense,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “It’s frustrating to be ending the year at 2-7 because in August, I felt like we had a better team than at any point in the (2018) season.

“These seniors, though, gave us everything they had and left it all out on the field.”

Bemrich, Charlie Shelly, Matthew McCrady, Bryce Anderson, Nick Lawler, Bennett McCarville and Ethan Lursen suited up for the final time as a Gael last night.
