Dodgers, Gael run in Storm Lake

STORM LAKE — The Fort Dodge and St. Edmond cross country teams competed in Storm Lake on Tuesday.

The Dodger boys were third with 120 points and the St. Edmond boys finished eighth with 182. MOC-Floyd Valley (53) was the team champion, followed by LeMars.

Algona (186) was sixth on the girls side, while the Gaels were seventh (197). Fort Dodge didn’t have a team score. Harlan was the team champion with 35 points.

Fort Dodge’s Josh Meier was seventh in a time of 18:18. Jonathon Madden was 17th for the Dodgers (18:51).

Also competing for Fort Dodge was Ryan Madden (20th in 18:57), Eric Crawford (24th in 19:04), Carter DeLanoit (52nd in 20:08), Jason Hobmeier (79th 22:18) and Grant Harrison (91st in 25:13).

Jed Tracy had the highest finish for the Gaels, crossing the tape in 18:51 in 18th place. Grant Heldorfer was 35th in 19:34.

Other runners for the Gaels were Hayden Mayer (38th in 19:48), Ronnie Orres (44th in 19:54), Aaron Lursen (47th in 19:56), Drew Szalat (68th in 21:05) and Connor Bocken (86th in 22:43).

“This was a good meet for both the boys and girls, because we were running against some quality, ranked opponents from bigger schools,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “Jed is disappointed, but he ran really smart and got stronger as the race went on. It was also one of Grant’s better races.”

Algona’s Ryan Stundahl broke into the Top-10 at 10th with a time of 18:30.

Brandon Steil was 30th in 19:21. Other counters were Bobby Erikson (55th), Nick Brown (57th) and Caden Weber (58th).

Aubrey Bemrich earned the highest finish for the Gaels, placing 24th in 22:50. Aleksandri Aljets was 31st in 23:21.

Also running for the Gaels was Caroline Shelly (39th in 23:55), Anna Kolacia (46th in 24:26), Kelli Kersten (57th in 25:29) and Sydney Schulte (67th in 26:05).

“The times aren’t going to indicate, but the girls ran a lot smarter,” Szalat said. “It was hot, wet and windy, so all the times will reflect that. The winning runner from Spencer is one of the top in the state and her time wasn’t as fast.

“We’ve been preaching about getting stronger as the race goes on. The girls did a good job of hitting their goals. I’m also encouraged of how we ran against Algona (North Central Conference opponent).”

Algona’s Carley Mullins was 13th in a time of 22:01. Counting runners for the Bulldogs were Brooklyn Helmers (29th), Moriah Knapp (30), Eliza Schultz (51st) and Ella Lawson (65th).

Competing for the Dodgers was Alexis Read (54th), Isabel Beekman (60th), Daniel Catherine (88th) and Mercedes Crouse (92nd).

The Gaels and Dodgers will be back in action on Monday when they compete in Humboldt.
