Algona’s Banwart is back

IOWA CITY — Cole Banwart will make his return to the football field for No. 14 Iowa this coming Saturday.

Banwart, a former all-stater for Algona, has been cleared to play. He will replace Kyler Schott at right guard for the Hawkeyes, who host Middle Tennessee State.

Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will air live on ESPN2 from Kinnick Stadium.

“Cole fortunately is coming back,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said during his weekly press conference. “We sat him two games and I think he’s back to where he looks.”

Banwart, a 6-foot- 4, 300-pound redshirt junior, started seven games last year for Iowa at right guard, including in a 27-22 victory over Mississippi State in the Outback Bowl. He played in five other games and saw action in three games as a freshman.

“My fear there was we go through the season where he’s 80 percent like he was last year and that really wasn’t fair to him,” Ferentz said. “I think we’ve got him healthy so he’ll slide in.”

Banwart made his first appearance this season against Iowa State after missing games vs. Miami (Ohio) and Rutgers. Schott, who was injured this past Sunday during a bye week practice, is expected to be out a couple weeks.

At Algona, Banwart earned first team all-state honors as a senior at offensive line and was first team all-state as a junior and sophomore on the defensive line. He was a four-year letterwinner and also played baseball, basketball, golf and track for the Bulldogs.

Humboldt graduate Brady Ross, the starting fullback, will once again serve as the special teams captain. Ross is also one of 10 players who have already received their undergraduate degree from the university.
