GOWRIE — The St. Edmond boys dominated on their way to a second straight Southeast Valley Invitational on Thursday, but the Gaels are already hungry for more.

In last year’s title run, the Gaels scored 81 team points. This time around, they tallied only 44 and placed all five counting runners in the Top-15.

OABCIG was second with 63 and Manson Northwest Webster (146) was third, followed by Woodward Academy (148) and South Central Calhoun (157).

“These kids are excited,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “From a coach’s perspective, to hear your kids tell you that they know they can do better, that’s one thing that a coach loves.”

With the graduation of South Central Calhoun’s Spencer Moon, last year’s silver medalist Louden Foster and bronze medalist Jed Tracy of St. Edmond had the chance to earn gold.

Foster (16:44) secured the championship, while Tracy (18:14) moved up a spot to No. 2.

“Jed’s form looks great and his stride looks good,” Szalat said. “We didn’t warm up well and I take the blame for that, but Jed has become a runner that is aware of what he needs. As a coach, I think I failed him a little.”

In his first varsity meet, freshman Aaron Lursen burst into the Top-5, finishing fourth in a time of 18:37.

Junior Grant Heldorfer was 1th in 19:21, while freshman Ronnie Orres (19:30) was 13th and Hayden Mayer (19:31) 14th.

Also competing for the Gaels was sophomore Drew Szalat (21st in 20:01) and junior Ryan Duckett (26th in 20:13).

“All of the guys dropped times from a year ago (here),” Szalat said. “It’s nice to see two freshmen crack the varsity lineup and place in the Top-15. Aaron was one minute away from the freshman record. ”

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows placed two runners in the Top-10. Kaeden Langfitt (19:08) was seventh and Isaiah Nebbe (19:17) placed ninth.

Manson Northwest Webster’s Quinn Lachelt was 15th, West Bend-Mallard’s Nolan Blair was 16th, Southeast Valley’s Gabe Campbell placed 19th and South Central Calhoun’s Tyler Lightner crossed in 20th to round out area runners in the Top-20.

The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday at Webster City.
