Webster City tops SE softball squad

The 15th-ranked (Class 4A) Webster City softball team used timely hits and quickness to claim a 10-1 victory over St. Edmond here Monday night at Rogers Park.

The Lynx plated runs in all but one inning, including one each in the first three frames. In the fifth, they pushed the lead from 3-0 to 7-0.

Zoey Woodle had a triple, while Kelly Stoakes, Atlanta Hopp, Jenna Miller and Alayna Finucan each drove in two runs for Webster City (19-5 overall, 11-1 in North Central Conference).

Jacque Oberg supplied the lone Gael (12-11, 8-4) run with a solo homer in the fourth to extend her hit streak to nine games. The senior has 15 hits and nine RBI during that time.

“I know it was 10-1, but I feel like it was a much closer game than the score showed,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “Webster City really did a nice job of stringing things together and when they got an extra opportunity, they took advantage of it.”

Seven of the nine Webster City batters recorded at least a base hit, with the other two both drawing walks. Stoakes, a freshman, had a two-RBI single as she pushed her on-base streak to 23 consecutive games.

Kasch, a 10th-grader, has a nine-game hit streak in which she has 19 hits, 11 runs and 17 RBI.

“I thought there were a few positives we can take from this,” Clark said. “And, we’ve got some big games coming right up that we can bounce back in.”

Miller picked up her 13th win inside the circle, allowing just four hits with three strikeouts. She has 32 strikeouts over her last six starts.

St. Edmond will host No. 3 (3A) Humboldt back here Tuesday at 6 p.m. before taking on Southeast Valley after. Webster City hosts Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Wednesday night before heading to Humboldt on Friday.
