HUMBOLDT — The third-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt softball team started out as the home team on the scoreboard Tuesday night and eventually were able to finish that way on their home field.

Heavy rains hit Rogers Park and led to a lengthy delay between the Wildcats and St. Edmond before officials moved the game north to Humboldt.

The Wildcats picked up a 2-0 victory.

Inclement weather had caused the original date to be postponed for the game, with it being played as part of a planned split-doubleheader before the Gaels faced Southeast Valley.

“I am just so proud of all of them,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “Everyone gave 110 percent out there, trying to make all of the plays and going after everything.

“It was a very unique situation, but I am so proud of how the girls responded and continued to respond.”

Humboldt (24-2 overall, 10-1 in North Central Conference) plated both runs in the fourth as Ellie Jacobson helped her own cause with an RBI-double. Kendal Clark scored the other run of the game.

Jacobson, who struck out five of the first six batters she faced, finished with 12 strikeouts on the night and allowed just three hits. The junior has four consecutive games with at least 10 strikeouts, and 84 overall during a seven-game win streak.

“Ellie is a gamer,” Clark said. “After another delay, she came up with a 2-1 count and poked it out into left-center to score (Carlie Thompson).

“Both of their runs came on hard-earned hits that they just found a way to make contact on. That’s why they are a top team in the state.”

Jacque Oberg collected a hit to extend her hit streak to 10 games, with Macey Mason and Rylee Kinney also recording base hits. The Gaels threatened in the seventh, as Devyn Scott moved runners to second and third, but Jacobson recorded the final two outs.

“Devyn has been playing great for us both at the plate and in the field,” Clark said. “She stepped up again in a key situation.”

Ella Vratny allowed just four hits and struck out five, not walking a batter.

“Ella really pitched great against a very dangerous lineup,” Clark said. “The runs they scored, they earned.”

Humboldt heads to Iowa Falls-Alden on Wednesday before a showdown with No. 15 (4A) Webster City back here on Friday. St. Edmond hosts Clear Lake on Wednesday for Senior Night.

Prior to the game being moved from Rogers Park, the Gael players honored Candy Kamrath for her continued support of high school athletics, presenting her with a plaque.
