Gaels come up short on Senior Night

Despite ending the regular season with an 8-1 loss to Clear Lake here Wednesday night, St. Edmond head softball coach Nick Clark had plenty of positives to talk about.

Clark and the Gaels honored seniors Devyn Scott, Abby Landwehr, Macey Mason, Erin Flattery and Jacque Oberg prior to first-pitch inside Rogers Park.

The group recorded 48 wins over the past four seasons, with half of those coming on their home field. They collected over 380 hits, drove in 200 runs and stole over 150 bases.

“What an incredible, incredible senior class,” Clark said. “They have all meant so much to this program and this school, especially out here on the softball diamond.”

Oberg belted her second home run of the week for the lone St. Edmond (12-13 overall, 8-6 in North Central Conference) run of the game. She will enter the postseason riding an 11-game hit streak.

Flattery and Mason both had a hit and reached base twice on the night. Oberg finished 2-for-3.

After battling third-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt to a 2-0 loss on Tuesday, St. Edmond was unable to find any rhythm at the plate vs. the Lions (9-12, 5-7), who swept the season series and also handed the Wildcats their lone NCC loss to date.

“Clear Lake is a very, very good hitting team,” Clark said. “They were exceptional in the field, just like they were the first time we played them.”

Sara Faber had two doubles and drove in a run, with both Macy Mixdorf and Chelsey Holck collecting two RBI each.

Despite the loss, Clark wanted to focus on honoring the seniors and preparing for Monday’s regional opener. Flattery and Oberg are five-year softball letterwinners, with Mason earning four letters, Scott three and Landwehr one in her only season.

“I am just so proud of these girls,” Clark said. “They have grown as players and are going to do great things in the future. But we aren’t done yet.

“Just like everybody else, we will be 0-0 next week.”

St. Edmond welcomes Riceville to Rogers Park Monday in a 1A regional opener at 7 p.m. The winner heads to AGWSR on Wednesday.
