FIRST FOUR: A look back at the inaugural champs
As the 2019 Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota Webster County golf tournament approaches, we take a look back at the first champions from the event after The Messenger obtained sponsorship nearly 40 years ago.
Gerry Moore was the first-ever winner in 1980, carding rounds of 74, 70 and 33 at Lakeside for a five-stroke victory over Tim Joselyn, Rob Roby and Roger Brown.
Roxanne Kuhlman broke through when the women’s division was formally introduced in 1991. Kuhlman fired a 74 at the Fort Dodge Country Club and a 84 at Lakeside to take top honors.
The first inaugural champ on the men’s side came in 1997, when Bob Wallentine shot an 80 at Lakeside and a 76 at the FDCC, then earned the crown with a championship nine score of 42.
The women’s senior bracket was added in 2005, when Roxie Swenson had a 93-97 — 190 to bring home the trophy.
On-line registration for the July 13 and 14 tournament, sponsored by The Messenger, is set up for all tournament participants this year at https://fdcc

The men’s open and senior division fields are asked to visit Lakeside (515-576-6741) with questions, concerns or if help is needed signing up. The women should go to the Country Club (955-8551).
All Webster County residents and workers are eligible to participate in the event, which has attracted nearly 8,000 golfers since The Messenger obtained sponsorship in 1980.
