SE baseball team falls short at Algona

ALGONA — The St. Edmond baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Algona on Monday.

The Gaels (2-2 overall, 0-1 North Central Conference) took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning, but the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0) tacked on two runs to pick up the victory.

Cameren Rindone delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. After an out, Carson Devine hit a triple and then scored on an infield single from Spencer Holmes.

“Anytime you’re playing a team with a coach that has the last name of Elsbecker (Mike), you know they’re going to be good,” said. St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “I think we are playing with more confidence and I like the direction that we are going.

“We have a few things that we need to work on in certain situations, but we’ll take care of that.”

Grant Heldorfer, Jack McEvoy and Elijah Litwiller had its for the Gaels. McEvoy drove in two runs.

“We weren’t sure who was going to pitch (Heldorfer), but I asked Grant and he stepped up,” Szalat said. “He gave up eight hits to a 3A school, so I think he did a good job.

“Jed (Tracy) made a phenomenal catch in center. We played well defensively with no errors, coming off an eight error game.”
