WEST DES MOINES — Before he officially becomes a college basketball player, recent St. Edmond graduate Andrew Gibb will get the chance to compete against — and alongside — some of those already at that level.

Gibb was selected for the YMCA Capital City League as part of the MRG International roster. The team will be coached by Matt Gilbert.

The season begins on June 16 and finishes July 21 with a championship game. All games are held at either Valley Southwoods Freshman High School or Valley High School.

Following his standout career as a Gael that left him as the school’s career scoring leader, Gibb committed to Iowa Central as part of Chad Helle’s first recruiting class as head coach.

“I was really honored to be selected to play,” Gibb said. “Being from Des Moines, I remember going to a lot of the games with my dad to watch some of my favorite Cyclones play,

“Now, being able to play with and against them and other college players will be a great opportunity for me.”

Gibb finished this past season fourth in the state in scoring at 28.7 points per game. He shot almost 54 percent from the field, 36 percent from the 3-point line and 88 percent at the free throw stripe.

Joining Gibb on his team are Iowa State’s Terrence Lewis and Javan Johnson, Drake’s Issa Samake and Connor Gholson, Simpson’s Conor Riordan, Des Moines Area’s Ryan Schmitt, New Mexico JC’s Jeremiah Chandler and former Truman State player Reed Mells. Al Campbell, a future teammate with Gibb at Iowa Central, will also be on the squad.

Former Algona standout and current Wayne State player Luke TerHark will compete on the Waukee-Clive Veterninary Clinic squad with former Iowa Central player Jaden Kephart selected to the Walnut Creek YMCA team.

TerHark recently completed his junior season with Wayne State, making four starts and playing in 29 games. He has played in 81 games over the past three years for the Wildcats.

Kephart played in 31 games for the Tritons this past winter, making 13 starts and scoring 110 points. He also dished out 44 assists.

Some notables selected for other teams include Iowa State’s Michael Jacobson, Caleb Grill, George Conditt IV, Tre Jackson, Rasir Bolton, Solomon Young, Prentiss Nixon, Luke Anderson and Zion Griffin, former Northern Iowa player Matt Schneiderman and Drake’s Garrett Sturtz.
