Gaels split at CYO

CARROLL — The St. Edmond baseball team split a pair of games at the CYO Tournament on Sunday.

The Gaels defeated Carroll Kuemper, 9-8, but lost to Bishop Garrigan, 10-9.

An infield single by Connor Bocken scored pinch runner Charlie Shelly to win the opener for St. Edmond (2-1 overall). Jack McEvoy, who went 2-for-2 with a triple and landed on the all-CYO team, had reached base and been replaced by Shelly.

Bocken was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the victory. Nick Bennett went 2-for-3 with a run driven in.

Cael Kolacia earned the victory in relief. Jackson Kochendorfer started and struck out 10 in 5.1 innings.

Noah Carlson was 4-for-5 with three RBI against the Golden Bears, while Bocken went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

“We had a solid day at the plate, scoring 18 runs. We swung the bats well,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “Our defense and pitching was a little up and down, but we know what we need to shore up. We pulled it out against a quality program in Kuemper and took another good ballclub in Garrigan right down to the wire.

“I think being competitive in that game shows how much we’ve grown. Garrigan really took it to us twice last year.”

St. Edmond is at Algona on Monday night. First varsity pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
