WC’s Ferrell earns NCC golf title

MASON CITY — Webster City’s Nathan Ferrell held off three Clear Lake golfers here Monday for the North Central Conference individual title, but the Lions earned team gold.

Ferrell finished with a 72 at the Mason City Country Club, with Clear Lake’s Tyler Eaton, Jack Barragy and Tate Storbeck behind him. The Lions shot a 322, nine strokes ahead of the Lynx.

Humboldt was third with a 341, St. Edmond fourth at 342 and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows fifth with a 353.

Drew Schaeffer secured all-NCC honors for the Gaels with an 81, placing sixth overall.

“I’m just real proud of the guys,” SEHS head coach Dan Streit said. “We shot real well as a team against three Class 3A teams that will be battling for a state title here later this month.

“I’m happy with how we did.”

Ferrell carded a 34 with two birdies and seven pars on the front, adding a pair of birdies and three more pars on the back nine holes.

“I have goals in my head that I want to accomplish this season and this one was up near the top of the list,” Ferrell said. “I still have more that I want to achieve, but this is a good start.”

Drake Doering had an 85 with Chase Rattenborg and Garrett Arnold adding 87s for Webster City. Trey Lyons had a 92 and Josh Casady a 98.

“We had our chances, because Clear Lake did not shoot what they probably should have,” WCHS head coach Eric Dawson said. “Our expectations were to win it, so we were disappointed for sure.”

Schaeffer had a 40 on the front and a 41 on the back. That included two birdies and five pars.

“Finishing in the Top-10 was a great honor for me and something I had been working toward all season,” Schaeffer said. “In a conference like the NCC with all bigger schools, it’s an awesome experience even to be in contention when facing them.

“I thought my round went very well, but there always is room for improvement. This course was amazing and great practice for our sectional coming up where as a team we will all look to improve and attempt to make another state run.”

Along with Schaeffer’s 81, Andrew Gibb finished with an 84, Devon Wirtz an 85, Peyton Scott a 92, Korbin Brown a 105 and Bennett McCarville a 106.

“I think we are hitting our rhythm at the right time,” Streit said. “We’ve played three 18-hole courses here in the past few days and the guys all seem to really be playing with a lot of confidence.”

Humboldt’s Hudson Gargano was the low golfer for the Wildcats with an 83, as Jamison Heinz added an 84. Gabe Gidel carded an 86 and Jack Arndt an 88.

Dalton Nesheim from Clarion-Goldfield/Dows finished fifth with an 81 to earn all-conference honors. Blake Jackson had an 88, with both Alec Martin and Brandon Schultz posting 92s for the Cowboys.

Algona’s Marcus Wykoff carded an 87 followed by an 89 from James Wartick, 94 by Jason Cecil and 99 from Luke McKenna.

St. Edmond heads to a 1A sectional on Friday in Newell.
