North Union’s Hagebock golden

DES MOINES — Elliott Hagebock continued to defy even himself Friday at the state track meet.

The North Union senior cleared 6-foot-6 to win the Class 1A high jump title, putting a cap on a career that included a fourth place medal last season.

“Honestly, this means the world to me,” Hagebock said. “I just wanted to come out and jump my best and the fact that it all came together is insane.

“I couldn’t ask for a better way to end my track career.”

Hagebock didn’t have a miss until 6-5, as he cleared that height on his third attempt. He was left with just Ar-We-Va’s Keegan Simons and Central Decatur’s Cauy Spidle at 6-6, but went over on his first attempt.

Neither Simons or Spidle were able to do so, leaving the gold for Hagebock, who has battled injuries throughout his high school career including a torn ACL suffered as a sophomore.

“The atmosphere was insane, especially during my last jumps,” Hagebock said. “I had been part of watching high jump while they were at high heights in the past and experiencing that kind of thing from the side of the jumper was amazing.”

Hagebock found his coach, Troy Adams, in the crowd immediately after winning for an emotional embrace with plenty of Warrior fans supporting him from the stands.

Coming into state, Hagebock was 10th in 1A after clearing a personal-best 6-2.5 at a home meet in April.

“I didn’t really think that 6-6 was an option (to clear),” Hagebock said. “I still don’t think that it’s fully sunk in yet to be honest. I just wanted to go out and jump my best, and I guess you could say I did just that.”
