No. 11 Gaels rough up Pocahontas Area

POCAHONTAS — After a tough game in their season opener, the 11th-ranked St. Edmond softball team bounced back in impressive fashion on Thursday night.

The Gaels (1-1 overall) cruised to a 17-0 victory in three innings over Pocahontas Area.

St. Edmond, who had five errors in their opener against Newell-Fonda on Monday night, had only one on the night.

“Defensively we were very solid with only one error,” said St. Edmond head coach Nick Clark. “We had a much better confidence about us. Everyone up and down the lineup had good at-bats.

“It was very fun to watch them have fun.”

The Gaels did damage at the plate and on the bases as well. They stole 13 bases and had 12 hits on the night.

Rylee Kinney had three hits and drove in four runs. Erin Flattery and Jocy Timmerman had two hits and two RBI each.

Devyn Scott had a triple and Jacque Oberg had a double for the Gaels.

Ella Vratny (1-1) earned the win, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters.

“Offensively we looked much better,” Clark said. “I really liked how patient we were at the plate. We drew 10 walks and got to 2-0 hitters’ counts.

“We were both patient and aggressive when we needed to be.”

The Gaels are back in action on Wednesday when they host Humboldt at 7:30 p.m.
