Humboldt’s Heinz secures silver

DES MOINES — The second day of the state track meet presented more medals for North Central Conference athletes.

Humboldt’s Jamison Heinz earned a silver, with Algona’s distance medley relay and Webster City’s Garrett Whitmore each securing bronze finishes.

Battling the rainy conditions here inside Drake Stadium, Heinz went 21-6.25 on his second-to-last jump, finishing just a inch behind of state champion Keyontre Clark of Sioux City Heelan in Class 3A.

“It has been great to compete at state and I definitely feel more confident since this is my second year competing in the long jump,” said Heinz, a junior. “I think competing at the Drake Relays this year helped me too.

“The rain made it interesting. I just tried to focus and not let it affect me.”

Sammonte Bawden, Skyler Groen, Wyatt Wegener and Trey Engen raced the Bulldog medley to third behind Atlantic and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The quartet finished in 3:32.46.

“We were kind of disappointed because we were talking about winning it for a while now,” Groen said. “But congrats to Atlantic since they had a great team. Everyone did their part on our relay from Sammonte starting off with a solid 200 to Wyatt with a fast 400 and Trey ending with a great finish.

“I’ve been battling a quad strain since districts, but I think I still held my ground.”

Algona also had a third place finish at the Drake Relays in the distance medley earlier this year. Bawden and Wegener are both juniors, with Groen and Engen being seniors.

Engen won the 3200 title on Thursday, Bawden will run in the 100 and 200 finals on Saturday, with Wegener joining him in the 100.

Whitmore claimed his medal in the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.17. Joven Nelson from Nevada and Bret Price of Boone were first and second, with all three coming out of the final heat.

“I was surprised (to get third), but things happen,” said Whitmore, who is only a junior. “Once you get to state, nothing is set in stone and I proved that.

“The last two hurdles I really kicked it in and I didn’t hold back.”

Humboldt’s Justin Jones was 11th in the shot put (49-9.5) and Owen Terwilliger placed 14th (47-11.5). Webster City’s Austin Lampman placed 23rd in the shot put (45-0).

Bishop Garrigan’s distance medley finished 16th in 1A with a time of 3:45.88. That quartet was John Capesius, Brad Capesius, Sam Vaske and John Meis.

Manson Northwest Webster’s Brian Pearson, Austin Anliker, Ben Quade and Carson Collins were 18th in the same race in 3:47.58.
