Bockoven’s gem lifts Fort Dodge

ALGONA — The Fort Dodge baseball team broke open a close game late to pull away from Algona on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers (3-2 overall) used a four-run seventh inning to finish off the Bulldogs, 6-1.

Algona took a 1-0 lead after the first frame, but Fort Dodge responded with two runs in the second.

“We fought back as we have been doing,” said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. “We need to get through first inning cleaner, but our guys responded.”

Both teams were held scoreless until the seventh when the Dodgers picked up four insurance runs.

“We had a really good rally for some breathing room,” Utley said. “We worked their starter deep enough and got right after their reliever.”

Junior Mason Bockoven earned the win on the mound, going the distance. He struck out 11 batters, walked and hit one and gave up no earned runs.

“Mason was dominant on the mound with 11 strikeouts in 21 at-bats,” Utley said. “It’s good to see him in the starter’s role for the first time (this year).”

Freshman Carson Peterson had a big day at the plate, driving in three runs. Drew Callon had two hits including a double.

“Carson had an excellent day,” Utley said. “He was putting good contant on the ball. He drove in two with a base hit and had a sac fly.

“Anytime you can get that out of your eight spot is good. We also did a nice job in our middle infield, turning some double plays.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Friday at Boone.
