Tritons complete weekend sweep
The Iowa Central baseball squad completed a weekend sweep of Ellsworth with a pair of narrow victories at Ed Barbour Field on Sunday.
The Tritons won, 6-5 and 8-7, to improve to 22-14 overall and 11-5 in the ICCAC.
Alberto Ortiz went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the opener, while Derek Kay was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Iowa Central led 6-2 going into the final frame, before allowing three runs.
Noah Grimes homered to help the Tritons’ cause.
Jarrett Blunt (4-2) earned the victory, with Jason Ferreras notching his sixth save.
Iowa Central built a 6-1 advantage in the second contest and hung on from there. Cullen Weiss was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI on a double and a triple. Kay drove in two as well.
Lyle Fini went 2-for-4 and scored three times.
Ferreras worked three innings of scoreless relief, striking out four.
The Tritons plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 7-7 tie against the Panthers (6-34, 1-15).
“We made it interesting,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “We did enough to win both games, but they weren’t exactly clean. A weekend sweep in the conference isn’t something to take for granted, though.
“We just need to do a better job of finishing. We let them hang around and it almost cost us.”
The Tritons return to action on Tuesday at Southwestern.
