LAKE MILLS — Ryan Duckett may be the last St. Edmond wrestler standing, but he isn’t standing alone.

“This year I am going into districts as a champion and the team has been nothing but supportive,” Duckett said. “Everyone continues to come to practice to help me train for districts and that shows how close and selfless my teammates are.”

With a small inexperienced group this season, it’s been a learning process for the entire Gael group.

“The season has been a difficult season for us all,” Duckett said. “We have had some first and second year wrestlers, which makes it difficult to keep confidence up, but as the season has gone on we have became a very close team. Although being a small team is tough, it insures that we will all get plenty of mat time.

“We have seen a lot of improvement from everyone on the team. It’s hard for everyone to stay focused but we all do our part to keep the team together.”

The Gael sophomore has come along ways since the season started and has turned the corner.

“His mentality has gotten a lot better,” said St. Edmond head coach Eugene Carlson. “As coach and wrestler you butt heads once in a while, but we’ve come together and he realizes the experience we have as coaches and we want the best for him.

“Coach (Vinnie) Harvey even said, ‘I think we did a good job and he’s ready.”

Duckett (23-7), who is 51-20 in his career, will face Mason City Newman junior Cael Wollner (23-18) in the opening round of the 106 pound bracket.

On the opposite side is seventh-ranked Central Springs’ freshman Clayton McDonough (44-1) who will face Emmetsburg freshman Nic Lowe (27-12).

Duckett recorded a fall over Lowe in the 1:48 of the sectional championship match in Manson.

“At every practice we’ve been telling him Mason City Newman, Mason City Newman,” Carlson said. “He has to focus on that one match. We’ve put a lot of work in this week and all the wrestlers have been helping get him ready.”

District action will begin in Lake Mills at noon.

Emmetsburg, who won the sectional title in Manson will enter districts with a near perfect lineup, as 13 wrestlers will compete for state bids.

Entering as sectional champions are Sean Brennan (113), Levi Aldous (126), Ethan Berven (132), Colton Anderson (138), Spencer Griffin (145), Bret Hoyman (152), Mason Griffin (160) and Jon Lace II (195).

Sectional runner ups for the E-Hawks are Nic Lowe (106), Kelly Griffin (120), Matthew Wirtz (170), Nick Schany (182) and Calvin Hart (285).

Gabe Rolon (120), Mark Dawson (145) and Joel Mendoza (220) will represent Eagle Grove. Rolon and Mendoza were sectional champs.

Manson Northwest Webster’s Daltin Roest (126) and Carson Collins (132) were sectional runner ups.

North Union’s Jake Anderson (285) will compete as a sectional champion.

Six South Central Calhoun wrestlers will compete in their district meet at Sibley-Ocheyedan.

Jordan Khommanyvong (132) and Chase McAlister (160) were both sectional champions.

Entering as runner ups are Kevin King (106), Ayden Toms (113), Blake McAlister (145) and Brian King (220).

East Sac County’s Garret Bruce will compete in the 170 pound bracket after winning sectionals.

Bruce’s teammates Nathan Thomsen (132) and Kipp Corbin (285) were sectional runner ups.
