St. Edmond girls lose to No. 4 Lions

For the second night in a row, the St. Edmond girls basketball squad was matched up with a Top-5 team in Class 3A.

After falling to No. 5 Algona here Thursday, 73-20, the Gaels were unable to rattle fourth-ranked Clear Lake, suffering a 76-30 setback.

Sara Faber led all scorers with 27 points for the Lions (12-3 overall, 9-1 in North Central Conference), as the junior surpassed the 1,000-point career mark in the third quarter.

Four other Clear Lake starters scored in double figures, with Lexi Fasbender posting 17 points and both Julia Merfield and Zoe Fasbender 10.

Leading the way for St. Edmond (2-14, 1-9) was Macey Mason, as the senior knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points. Erin Flattery added seven and six rebounds, with Brea McNeil chipping in four points, three steals and a blocked shot.

“We didn’t come out with a lot of energy,” SEHS head coach Steve Neuberger said. “Once Clear Lake got going, it was tough to stay with them. They were knocking down shots and really pressuring us on defense.”

The Lions forced 21 turnovers and made 11 triples, including eight in the first half on their way to building a 50-19 lead. Faber had 18 in the opening 16 minutes and Lexi Fasbender added 14.

“That is just a really good team that will be a tough out here in the postseason for anybody,” Neuberger said. “They have a lot of nice pieces and were really in a groove against us.”

St. Edmond will play three games next week, with two on the road. First up is a date at Humboldt on Tuesday. The Gaels posted a 39-35 victory over the Wildcats back in December.
