The Iowa Central men were unable to take advantage of a packed Hodges Fieldhouse here Saturday, falling to Des Moines Area, 90-63.

With several high school juniors and seniors in attendance for “Jam the Gym,” the Bears rode the play of Tray Buchanan, Quinton Taylor and DeShawn Davidson to victory.

Buchanan and Taylor each scored 17 points, with Davidson adding 16 for DMACC (13-6 overall, 3-3 in ICCAC). Zach Lester, a former Clear Lake all-stater, added 10.

For the Tritons (9-12, 2-4), Jesse Moss had 14 points off the bench with Kane Kramer adding nine. Royshawn Webb, Dallas Bailey, Jaden Kephart and Kendrick Foster all posted eight.

“I call this team a water faucet,” ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher said. “They can turn it on and they can turn it right off. Credit DMACC for getting us out of rhythm there and taking it to us.

“We were faced with adversity on the court and our leaders didn’t do anything to overcome it.”

Iowa Central was firing on all cylinders early on, racing out to a 27-19 lead. However, the Bears closed the first half on a 30-11 run to take control.

Buchanan had 12 points in the first half, with Davidson adding 11 and Taylor 10. DMACC and Iowa Central combined for 16 first half three-pointers, with the Tritons hitting 14 and the Bears 13 for the game.

“We’ve just got to do a better job on defense first and foremost,” Pilcher said. “We knew Davidson and Buchanan would score, but we couldn’t let somebody else get hot. We didn’t do a good enough job of stopping them from getting to the basket.”

Bailey grabbed 11 rebounds, with Webb adding five and four assists.

Iowa Central hits the road Wednesday night, taking on Southwestern in Creston. The Spartans (12-9, 1-5) fell to Little Priest Tribal yesterday, 83-80.
